Mount Olympus
Epirus – Ioannina: A lovely town by the lake, where winter brings a peaceful charm. The crisp air, the cozy cafés, and the stunning Perama Cave make it a perfect getaway.
Fun fact: The Perama Cave, located just outside Ioannina, is one of the largest and most impressive caves in Greece. It’s believed to have been formed over 1 million years ago! What’s even more fascinating is that the cave was discovered by accident in 1940 when locals were searching for a place to hide from invading forces. Today, it’s known for its stunning stalactites and stalagmites, some of which are said to resemble animals and human figures. It’s like nature’s own art gallery, waiting to be explored!
Zagorochoria – Papigo: The stone villages, the snowy mountains, and the beautiful Vikos Gorge—it’s all like stepping into another world.
This destination can be combined with Ioannina. Here is a fun fact about this destination. Zagorochoria is famous for its stone bridges, and the most iconic one, Kokkoros Bridge, is said to be so strong that it can withstand earthquakes! The bridges were built hundreds of years ago by locals using traditional techniques, and many of them are still standing tall today. The entire region is a natural paradise, with Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest gorges in the world, cutting through the landscape—it’s so deep, in fact, that it’s known as the "Grand Canyon of Europe."
A few kilometers away from Delphi. You can also combine this with Galaxidi.
Dimitsana: A peaceful village with old-world charm. The ancient stone houses and winding streets are perfect for slow walks, and the open-air water-powered museum gives a fascinating glimpse into the area’s past.
Dimitsana is not only charming but also played a key role in Greece's War of Independence. During the 1820s, the village became a hub for revolutionary activity, with locals using the area’s secluded mountain routes to smuggle weapons and supplies to fight the Ottoman Empire. Today, you can still visit the Museum of the Greek Revolution in Dimitsana to learn about this heroic history while exploring the village’s beautiful stone streets.
Trikala (Korinthos area) is a charming village divided into three parts: Upper, Middle, and Lower Trikala. It's known for its beautiful traditional stone houses, picturesque cobblestone squares, and scenic streets lined with centuries-old plane trees.
The village is also famous for its small chapels and stone fountains that give it a timeless charm. Just a short drive away, you'll find Ancient Corinth and the towering Acrocorinth fortress—offering both a rich historical experience and spectacular views.
Thessaloniki is a lively city that takes on a special warmth in winter. With its mix of historical landmarks like the White Tower, vibrant markets, and cozy cafés right in the waterfront, it’s a perfect spot to experience Greece’s rich culture. Whether you're enjoying the local bougatsa pastry, exploring the ancient ruins, or exploring the Upper city and the numerous churches, Thessaloniki offers a unique winter charm that's both energetic and inviting.
Fun Fact: Thessaloniki is second only to Istanbul when it comes to Byzantine treasures. The city is home to some of the most impressive Byzantine sites in the world, including stunning churches, ancient mosaics, and the Byzantine Walls. Thessaloniki is also close to Vergina, the ancient city where the royal tombs of the Macedonian kings, including King Philip II (father of Alexander the Great), were discovered—making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts.
Nymfaio: A tiny village tucked into the mountains, Nymfaio is like something out of a storybook. With forests to explore and fresh mountain air, it’s a peaceful winter retreat.
Fun Fact: Nymfaio is not just a peaceful mountain retreat—it’s also known for its beautiful horses! The village is home to a small community of horses that roam the surrounding forests, adding to the village’s picturesque, storybook atmosphere. Nearby, Arktouros, a wildlife conservation organization, helps protect the area’s brown bear population, ensuring a balance between nature and the village’s peaceful lifestyle.
Lake Plastira: A stunning spot for nature lovers. The lake surrounded by mountains is a peaceful place to hike, bike, or just take in the views.
Fun Fact: Lake Plastira was created in the 1950s by the construction of a dam on the Tavropos River to help with irrigation in the region. Today, it’s not only an important water source but also a beautiful natural destination. Surrounded by lush forests and mountains, the lake offers peaceful boat rides, hiking, and birdwatching, making it a perfect escape for nature lovers.

And while I could keep adding more hidden gems, I’ll wrap up with this last one.
Palaios Panteleimon: Nestled at the foot of Mount Olympus, this village is a winter dream. Think snowy paths, stone houses, and a quiet, magical atmosphere that feels miles away from the busy world.
Fun Fact: Palaios Panteleimonas it’s a film-worthy location! The village’s traditional stone houses and narrow cobblestone streets have made it a popular spot for photographers and filmmakers. Its picturesque setting, nestled beneath Mount Olympus, has been used in Greek and international productions. Walking through its charming alleys feels like stepping onto a movie set!
